What a crazy year 2020 has turned into!
Never in my life did I think a pandemic would occur like the one our entire world is in. I had one son graduate from high school in May and thankfully, my oldest daughter graduated last December. Unfortunately, many of her friends finished this year with my son. Lots of life changes have occurred on many fronts.
I heard a pastor at Hillsong Church reflect on COVID19, life and racism. He said that when COVID19 hit, the world slowed down; we stopped, asked questions and listened like never before. We wanted to know how we could live safely during these unprecedented times. If we approached racism and life issues in the same manner, what a different world we would live in. I agree with his reflection.
Many people, because they were stuck at home, started to think about home and life improvements.
- How can we live better with the ones we love?
- How can we create an extra income from home?
- How can we help friends and family members that would be better off living near us than apart?
These questions led me to reflect on the beauty and benefits of guest houses, also known as “accessory dwelling units” (ADUs).
ADUs are added on to existing homes or they can be a stand alone structure on your property. They are smaller than a duplex. If you plan to rent them out, the units are subject to permits and inspections. When built by a team of experts who have experience, your project will be a success. Not only will you gain positive ROI in terms of money and/or value, but you’ll also gain livability with people you love.

Prefabricated Units
Episode 1 of 3, shares ideas on prefabricated ADUs. These units are built off site and dropped onto your property. They can be fully customized inside to reflect the style and personality you desire, while the exteriors and floor plans are limited in how they look. Prefabs are similar to “track homes”.
Custom Build Options
Episode 2 of 3, talks about Custom Build ideas. I share different design/build options that tie in with the architecture of existing homes. The exteriors have unique personalities that fit the existing home or setting they are in.

Episode 3 of 3: Next week, I’ll share ideas on how the interiors can be finished out. There are some beautiful ideas and the potential is limitless!
